How does a playoff odds calculator work?

A playoff odds calculator plays out every remaining week of your regular season thousands of times, using what it knows about how each team scores, and then counts how often each team ends up in a playoff spot. If you make the playoffs in 6,200 of 10,000 simulated seasons, your odds are 62%. The better tools also apply your league's own rules while they do it, such as how many teams get in, whether there are divisions, and how ties in the standings get broken.

Most of the tools on this page connect to your league and read the schedule for you, which matters more than it sounds, because the teams you still have to play are half the answer. A 5-4 team with three bottom-feeders left can be in better shape than a 6-3 team that still has to face the top of the league.

Why do two calculators give you different odds?

Each one makes different choices about what a team's next score looks like. Some base it on what the team has actually scored so far this season, some on player projections for the weeks ahead, and some blend the two, so a team on a hot streak can look very different depending on which approach a tool takes. The league's rules matter just as much: if your league plays an extra game against the weekly median, a calculator that ignores it is simulating a different league from yours.

When the numbers disagree, check which tool reads your actual league settings and schedule, and trust that one over a tool that only knows your record.

What's the difference between playoff odds and playoff scenarios?

Odds give you a single percentage, while a scenario calculator (sometimes called a playoff machine) lets you pick the winner of each remaining matchup and shows you exactly what has to happen for you to get in. Odds are the better read in the middle of the season, and scenarios become the more useful tool in the last week or two, when you want to know whether you need to win outright or just need one of your rivals to lose.

If you're also weighing a trade to push for a spot, the trade analyzers can tell you whether the deal actually makes your team better, and the start/sit and lineup tools help with the week-to-week decisions that decide the race.

Questions managers ask

Are there free fantasy football playoff odds calculators?

Yes, 9 of the 15 playoff odds calculators listed here are free to use: Doritostats, Dynasty Command, Fantasy Almanac, Fantasy News Network, GridIQ, HistoLeague, LeagueQL, My Fantasy Analyzer and The Chacal. Some of the others have a free tier with paid extras, and each tool's page says what the paid version adds where we've been able to check it.

Which playoff odds calculator works with my Sleeper or ESPN league?

14 of these tools connect to Sleeper leagues and 9 connect to ESPN leagues. The "Which one works with your league?" section at the top of this page lists them by platform, so you can go straight to the ones that can read your league.

Is there a playoff odds calculator for Yahoo fantasy football?

Yes, but the choice is smaller than on Sleeper or ESPN. Dynasty Daddy, Fantasy Football WZRD and Playoff Computer are the ones we've found that work with Yahoo leagues.

How accurate are fantasy football playoff odds?

They're estimates, and they get more trustworthy as the season goes on. Early in the year a couple of big weeks can swing a team's odds a long way, while in the last two or three weeks there are few enough games left that the numbers firm up. A 95% chance still isn't a clinch, so wait for the math to say clinched before you start planning the victory lap.

When should I start checking my playoff odds?

Around the midpoint of your league's regular season is when the numbers start to mean something, because by then each team's scoring has settled into a pattern. From there, checking once a week after Monday night is plenty, and in the final week a scenario calculator that shows exactly which results you need is usually more useful than a percentage.
